About the Project / Scheme
School Health Check up is an important preventive measure under Primary
Health Care during which following purposes are served.

Major illness can be identified and timely
treated. |
| 2. |
Selective Health problems such as refractory
errors, disability etc. Which interfere with the child’s
performance can be corrected at earliest. |
| 3. |
Healthy habits to improve the lifestyle can
be inculcated by imparting Health Education of important aspects. |
| 4. |
Important Health Messages like Healthful living,
proper nutrition, messages on Immunization, Pulse Polio, Water
borne diseases, use of ORS etc. can reach each household through
students.

The above issues ultimately help in reducing morbidity & mortality in
student groups as well as local community. In addition, regular, sustained
school health examinations help to build a sound foundation for students future.
Public Schools are covered under this program. Since 1996 School Health Checkup is being conducted on a campaign basis during the months of October/November of every year. From 2005-2006 school health programme is conducted as a regular activity, during July to Oct.
The added advantages of the school health examination is as follows.

At once maximum no. of Students are made available
for examination. Therefore maximum percentage of the entire
students’ community can be covered at one time. |

Teachers and health staff can spare their time
exclusively for this activity. |
| c. |
Additional inputs from State Govt. are easy to
be made available at this time. |
| d. |
Follow up and operative procedures are given
due importance. |
Planning for school health examination -
| 1. |
Preparatory activities like enumeration of students,
procurement of drugs, School health cards etc. start usually during June/July
of every year. |
| 2. |
Communication to Schools for enumerating students
and preparing information on height, weight and chest circumference
of students by teachers and Health staff in that area. After their training in the month of july. |
| 3. |
Preparing School health checkup calendar by fixing
suitable dates and identifying Health Checkups teams to ensure
100% students' checkup. |
| 4. |
For specialists’ care/operations of cases
with major defects. Taluka level camp and examination of student by specialist. |
| 6. |
Recording of details of examination and abnormal
findings, if any, alongwith treatment given/referral made etc,
is done on student Health checkup cards. |
| 7. |
Referral chits for the needy students
are given to the teachers indicating name & institution
and dates of specialist care. |
| 8. |
Follow up of students who are given treated
locally. |
| 9. |
Ensure about
a) the referred students to attend the identified Referral institute.
b) students are examined and necessary management is done by M. O. of concern. |
| 10. |
Needy students are transferred to District level
/ Medical College level hospitals / specialty clinics for expert
opinion or surgery like operations for Heart defects, undescended
testis, Hernia, Orthopaedic problem etc. |
| 11. |
Maintaining records/reports & submitting necessary
reports to higher authorities. |

the district except corporation area. |

Medical Officer of Health ------- Municipal corporation
areas |
In addition Civil Surgeon / Medical College Hospitals / Specialty
Clinics & Hospitals are involved for providing necessary Medical/Surgical
care to all the referral cases from Rural & urban areas.
Plan for referral cases –Fixed dates place etc. for examination/
treatment are communicated to all related health institutions like
PHC/RH/ District hospitals etc.

For needy students major operations like - Cardiac
surgeries are also provided free of charge. |

The State Government finances the entire scheme. |
