Disease Information: Typhoid Fever
How to prevent transmission

The basic measures of typhoid control comprise those of primary prevention, viz. provision of safe drinking water, sanitory disposal of excreta,pasteurization of milk, sanitory food handling in public eating places and fly control measures. All these measures are aimed at preventing contact between man and the disease agent.
It has been found that provision of sufficient safe drinking water and sanitary latrines can reduce the "force of infection" by 50 percent.

Control of reservoir -
Surveillance
Early diagnosis and treatment
Disinfection of infective material - urine and stool with 5 % cresol. Soiled to be disinfected with 2 % chlorine and steam sterilize.
Surveillance and treatment for carrier.
Health education to patient, relative and community.

Control of sanitation -
Protection and purification of drinking water,
Sanitary disposal of human excreta.
Health education.

Immunization -
Very limited role , doesn`t give 100 % immunity. Immunity last for approximately 3 years hence booster dose required.
Vaccination not included in immunization schedule of State.

Common Messages
· Wash hands well with soap and water after going to the bathroom and before preparing food items.
· If traveling to a foreign country, be sure that drinking water and food is safe.
· Maintain cleanliness and proper sanitation at all times, especially after a flood or other natural disasters.
