 Rural urban comparison shows that, state is having highest urban population. Sex ratio
is favourable for rural area, whereas female literacy is significantly higher for urban area as compared to rural area.

Inter state comparison is made with Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu & Gujarat, Kerala , & Madhya Pradesh.

It shows that-

  • Kerala & Tamil Nadu have low CBR as compared to Maharashtra.
  • Crude Death Rate (CDR), Maharashtra is next to Kerala.
  • Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) of Maharashtra is more than that of Kerala & Tamil Nadu .

Major achievements in last 20 years

1 Reduction in birth rate from 31.1 (1984 )  to 17.9 (2008 )
2 Reduction in death rate from 9.4 (1984 ) to 6.6 ( 2008 )
3 Reduction in IMR from 76 (1984 ) to 33 ( 2008 )
4 Life expectancy increased from 59.6 years to 67.9 in Male and 71.3 in female (Population Projection by RG India 2001-2026 (Projected for 2006-2010 ).
5 Guinea worm /Smallpox / Schistosomiasis eradicated
6 Goal of Leprosy Elimination achieved in Sept. 2005 ( Prevalence Rate – 0.99 per 10,000 population).

1 Improvement in CBR from 26.2 in the year 1991 to 17.9 in 2008
2 Improvement in CDR from 8.2 in the year 1991 to 6.6 in 2008
3 Improvement in IMR from 60 in the year 1991 to 33 in 2008
4 CBR is higher in Rural areas 18.4 as compared to urban area 17.2 in 2008.
5 CDR is higher in Rrual areas 7.4 as compared to urban areas 5.6.
6 IMR is quite high in the Rural areas 40 as against 23 in urban area.

Important indicators
Mean age at marriage : Although legal age of age at marriage for girls is 18, significant marriages still take place below this legal age. Mean age at marriage as per National Family Health Survey I is 16.1 years for Maharashtra, which has improved to 16.7 years
in 98-99.
